Transport and Communication
Transport & Communication are important components of economic activity in all developing countries, and are an essential underlying requirement for achievement of the MDGs.
They facilitate trade, commerce, and social and cultural activity at local, national, and international levels. They support all livelihoods by providing access to employment opportunities, education and healthcare services, and provide opportunities for productive activities and social contacts.
In many developing countries, transportaccounts for between 5 and 10 percent of Gross National Product, hence the potential for enhancing national economic and social development through increasing efficiency in the transport sector is very significant.
Communication at all levels contributes towards economic and social development. It can be used to promote transparency and accountability, to encourage take-up of services such as health and education, to disseminate information and best practices, and to empower individuals and communities.
